Common Mounting Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

Even experienced taxidermists can run into challenges during a mount — but knowing the most common mistakes can save time, money, and frustration. A successful mount is all about patience, precision, and proper preparation.

One of the biggest errors is poor skin alignment. When the hide isn’t fitted correctly to the form, wrinkles, seams, and uneven features can appear once the mount dries. Take time during mounting to stretch, pin, and smooth the skin for a natural look.

Another common issue is incorrect eye placement. Eyes that are uneven or angled incorrectly throw off the entire expression. Always use live reference photos and check from multiple viewpoints before final setting.

Lastly, rushing the drying or finishing process often leads to cracks or fading later on. Let the mount cure fully before painting or adding gloss. Taxidermy is as much about patience as skill — every detail contributes to realism.

Tip: Photograph your work in progress from different angles. It’s easier to spot alignment or symmetry issues on camera than by eye alone.
