Why Climate Control Matters in Trophy Storage

A great mount deserves to last a lifetime — but even the best taxidermy can deteriorate without proper environmental care. Temperature and humidity play a bigger role in preservation than most realize.

Extreme heat or moisture can cause hides to loosen, colors to fade, or even attract pests. Ideally, trophy rooms should stay between 60–75°F with humidity around 45–55%. Consistent climate control prevents expansion, contraction, and mold growth that can damage both the form and finish.

Avoid placing mounts near direct sunlight, fireplaces, or vents. UV rays and airflow fluctuations dry out the hide and dull lifelike sheen. For long-term protection, use dehumidifiers or air purifiers — especially in basements or cabins where air circulation is limited.

A stable environment is the key to longevity. With the right climate control, your mounts will look just as stunning decades later as the day they were finished.

Tip: Keep a small digital thermometer-hygrometer in your display area to track changes year-round.
