The Science Behind Longevity: Caring for Your Mounts
Even the most masterful taxidermy can lose its luster without proper care. Sunlight, humidity, and dust are the silent enemies of preservation — but with the right maintenance, your mounts can look just as lifelike decades later.
Keep your displays out of direct sunlight to prevent fading and cracking. Maintain a stable indoor temperature and humidity level — ideally between 40–55%. Too dry, and hides may shrink; too damp, and mold or mildew can form. Regularly dust mounts using a soft brush or compressed air to prevent buildup that dulls color and texture.
An annual inspection is also wise. Check seams, adhesives, and any metal supports for signs of wear. Small fixes now prevent major restoration later.
A well-cared-for mount isn’t just a display — it’s a piece of history, an artwork meant to endure. Treat it like one, and your collection will stay pristine for generations.
Tip: Avoid using household cleaners or sprays on mounts. Stick with specialized taxidermy cleaning products designed for delicate surfaces.
