Protecting Mounts from Pests: Prevention and Solutions

Few things are more devastating to a collector than discovering pest damage on a prized mount. Moths, dermestid beetles, and other insects can quietly destroy hides, fur, and feathers if left unchecked — but with the right precautions, your mounts can stay safe year-round.

Start with a clean environment. Regularly dust your mounts and vacuum around display areas to remove potential food sources for insects. Keep humidity moderate and avoid placing mounts near windows, heat vents, or damp corners where pests thrive.

Inspect your pieces a few times a year, especially around seams, base edges, and tucked areas. If you notice fine powder or small holes, isolate the piece immediately and consult a professional taxidermist for treatment.

Preventive pest control sprays or moth deterrents (specifically safe for taxidermy) can also provide extra protection. Consistent care means peace of mind — and keeps your collection looking flawless.

Tip: Store seasonal mounts or backup pieces in sealed plastic containers with silica packs to keep moisture and pests out.
