They say the eyes are the windows to the soul — and in taxidermy, that couldn’t be truer. The eyes determine expression, focus, and life. Even the most skillfully mounted specimen can fall flat if the eyes aren’t right.
Start by choosing high-quality glass eyes that match the species’ natural color, size, and pupil shape. Look closely at wildlife photos — different species reflect light differently, and even pupil placement can indicate alertness or calmness.
Positioning is everything. A fraction of an inch can change emotion entirely — from curiosity to fear to aggression. Always study the symmetry of both eyes from multiple angles, ensuring they align naturally with the head tilt and body posture.
Lighting plays a role, too. Subtle gloss on the eyes enhances realism and gives the appearance of moisture, but overdoing it can look artificial.
Tip: Keep a collection of close-up wildlife eye photos for reference. The better you understand natural eye anatomy, the more lifelike and expressive your mounts will become.
